A Visit to the Vegetable Market

I had heard that a fish market is the noisiest place in the world. But, last Saturday, when I visited the local vegetable market, I felt that probably the expression ‘fish market’ contained half the truth only. I think the vegetable market is the noisiest place in the world.

The market was not only noisy but also filthy. The stench was all pervasive. I wondered how the vegetable sellers could sit the whole day in the dirt and smell. Cows, dogs and other animals were also mingling with human beings.

I, however, realised that just as I was compelled by circumstances to go to the market others must be also visiting it out of compulsion.

I had taken my servant with me and ordered him to carry few bags with him. We contacted different vendors and shopkeepers. We haggled with them over rates.

Finally we filled our bags and sacks with carrots. Radishes, turnips, peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, potatoes, tomatoes etc. - indeed whatever we could lay hands on at a reasonable rats. We hired a rickshaw and returned home. I thanked of God that I had not got an infectious skin disease like scabies, eczema etc. while going through the dirty vegetables market.

Five Professions I Admire Most

There are five professions which I admire most. First and foremost is the profession of teaching. A teacher is a nation builder. He is a role model for his students. In the modern materialistic age the teachers have lost the high status they used to enjoy in society. Still one can say, teaching is the noblest of all professions.

The second profession I admire is the profession of a doctor. There is no doubt many doctors have grown greedy. They try to fleece the poor helpless patients. But, I am talking of an ideal doctor. He considers service to mankind his mission. He charges modest fees and tries to reduce the sufferings of the ailing humanity.

The third profession is the profession of a soldier. A soldier is the savior of the country and its people. He is ready to sacrifice his lie for the sake of his country. He must be given due respect, regard and status in society.

The fourth profession I admire is the profession of a farmer. A farmer supplies food to all the people. Nobody can live without food. So, all of us depend for food on the farmer. The farmer must be given better treatment and facilities.

The fifth profession I admire is that of a politician. I am talking of an ideal politician, who is not corrupt. Such a politician is a model of service to society, country and making. Before independence we had great politicians like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Balgangadhar Tilak, Gokhale and others. I wish we had such great selfless leaders and politicians now also.

My Pet

My Pet

All children, and even grownups, are found of keeping pets. Some have fishes, cats, rabbits and parrots at their pets. I have a dog for a pet.

The name of my pet is Tarzan. He is ferocious dog. He is a big dog and has large bright eyes.

I got my dog from my cousin. He was going abroad and wanted a good home for his dog that was then a puppy. I was only too happy to volunteer and that is how I got Tarzan.

Tarzan is dark brown in color and barks very loudly at all strangers. Even the postman and other deliverymen are scared of coming inside our house. In fact when Tarzan is in the courtyard, no thieves or burglars dare think of entering the premises of the house.

Tarzan loves to eat bread, meat and drink milk. It accompanies me for my walks and enjoys barking at other dogs. I always put Tarzan on a leash so that the passerby’s does not get scared or traumatised.

I bathe it daily with dog soap and also comb its hair-coat. Tarzan is a clean dog and never spoils the floor of the house.

It sleeps in one corner of my room. When it is very cold in winters I smuggle it on to my bed and feel very warm and cosy.

I love Tarzan very much and thank God for giving me such a lovely and affectionate pet.

Five Places I Like Most

Man is a social animal and can feel at home in most places. I am also a social person and mix with all people and feel at home everywhere. There are however, five places I like the most.

Firstly, I like my home very much. It is the best place in the world for me. It reminds me of the saying:

East or west

Home, sweet home,

Is the best

Secondly, I like my school. I meet my friends in school, play and study with them, exchange gossip and eat Tiffin. School is a place which is going to enhance my personality. School changes the 

course of our lives.  It is here we learn subjects, languages about civilizations, manners and etiquette.

Thirdly, I like the temple. It is a place which gives time peace of mind. I am a religious person and I have firm faith in God. It is in the temple that we learn to appreciate all that God has given us.

Fortunately, I like the park near my house. My colony has many parks but the park adjacent to my house is the best. It is full of flowers, has a path for walkers and green grass and fountains. I go there every evening and spend time with my friends.

I also like to go to the railway station. This place is a source of great amusement for me. I love to see he hustle and bustle at the platform, the trains arriving and departing. People from all walks of life come here. They wear different dresses and speak different languages. A railway platform seems like a mini-India to me and is symbolic of national integration.

How I Caught a Thief

I think if somebody was to ask me what my most memorable movement has been so far I would definitely say it was the day I caught a thief.

It so happened that last night I went to bed early because I was feeling very tired. My father had gone out of station on a tour and mummy and I were in the house. My mother also decided to sleep in my room. After finishing all the household chores she came to the room and soon went off to sleep.

At about 2 a.m. I heard some soft sounds coming from my parent’s room. I looked through the key hole of the bedroom door and saw a shadow moving around the room. I realised at once that a thief had entered the house. I went back and quietly woke my mother and told her about the thief in hushed tones. She was very scared but somehow I got courage at that time and told her not to worry.

I went and bolted my parent’s bedroom from outside so that the thief would not be able to leave the room. I also locked the outer gate of the house so that even if the thief comes out of window, the grill of which he had broken to enter the room, he should not be able to run away.

Then I took my mother outside in the veranda and locked all the doors from outside. Now I raised an alarm. A large number of our neighbours come and stood outside the gate of our house. They formed a cordon. After this we rang the police. The police arrived very promptly and caught the thief. My presence of mind was appreciated and applauded by all. The police commissioner gave me a certificate and a prize at an impressive ceremony.

भूमिका – भारत के सामने अनेक समस्याएँ चुनौती बनकर खड़ी हैं | जनसंख्या-विस्फोट उनमें से सर्वाधिक है | एक अरब भारतियों के पास धरती, खनिज, साधन आज भी वही हैं जो 50 साल पहले थे | परिणामस्वरूप लोगों के पास जमीन कम, आय कम और समस्याएँ अधिक बढ़ती जा रही हैं |

भारत की जनसंख्या – आज विश्व का हर छठा नागरिक  भारतीय है | चीन के बाद भारत भी आबादी सर्वाधिक है | एक अरब भारतियों के पास धरती, खनिज, साधन आज भी वही हैं जो 50 साल पहले थे | परिणामस्वरूप लोगों के पास जमीन कम, आय कम और समस्याएँ अधिक बढ़ती जा रही हैं |

जनसंख्या-वृद्धि के कारण – भारतीय परंपराओं में बाल-बच्चों से भरा-पूरा घर ही सुख का सागर माना जाता है | इसलिए शादी करना और बच्चों की फौज़ जमा करने में हर नागरिक रूचि लेता है | यहाँ के लोग मानते हैं कि पिता का वंश चलाना हमारा धर्म है | ईश्वर-प्राप्ति के लिए पुत्र का होना अनिवार्य मन जाता है | परिणामस्वरूप लड़कियाँ होने पर संतान बढती जाती है |

दुष्परिनाम – जनसंख्या के दुष्परिणामों की कहानी स्पष्ट और प्रकट है | जहाँ भी देखो, हर जगह भीड़ ही भीड़ का सम्राज्य है | भीड़ के कारण हर जगह गंदगी, अव्यवस्था और हौचपौच है | देश का समुचित विकास नहीं हो पा रहा | खुशहाली की जगह लाचारी बढ़ रही है | बेकारी से परेशान लोग हिंसा, उपद्रव और चोरी-डकैती पर उतर आते हैं |

समाधान – जनसंख्या-वृद्धि रोकने के लिए आवश्यक है कि हर नागरिक अपने परिवार को सीमित करे | एक-से अधिक संतान को जन्म न दे | लड़के-लड़की को एक समान मानने से भी जनसंख्या पर नियंत्रण हो सकता है |

परिवार-नियोजन के साधनों के उचित उपयोग से परिवार को मनचाहे समय तक रोका जा सकता है | आज जनसंख्या रोकना राष्ट्रीय धर्म है | इसके लिए कुछ भी करना पड़े, वह करना चाहिए |

भूमिका – आज पुरे विश्व में आतंक का साया मंडरा रहा है | न जाने कैन-सा हवाई जहाज अगुआ कर लिया जाए और किसी गगनचुंबी इमारत से टकरा दिया जाए | न जाने, कब-कहाँ कौन मारा जाए ? जब आतंकवाद के क्रूर पंजों से संसद, विधानसभा और मुख्यमंत्री तक सुरक्षित नहीं तो आम आदमी कहाँ जाए ?

आतंकवाद क्यों – प्रश्न उठता है कि आतंकवाद क्यों फल-फुल रहा है ? इसके कारण अनेक हैं | एक समाज देश या धर्म का दुसरे तो दबाना और दबे हुए का बदले की भावना से हिंसक हो उठना मुख्य कारण है | बेरोजगारी, भ्रष्टाचार, गरीबी, भूख, क्षेत्रवाद, धर्माधता आदि अन्य कारण हैं | ये कारण इतने जटिल होते हैं कि कैंसर के समान शरीर को खा जाते हैं | कोई दवाई एन पर असर नहीं डाल पाती | एस कारण आतंकवाद फलता-फूलता रहता है |

विश्वव्यापी समस्या – आज आतंकवाद की जड़ें बहुत गहरी और विस्तृत हो गई हैं | अनेक आतंकवादी संगठनों के संपर्क-सूत्र पुरे विश्व में फैल गए हैं | ओसामा बिन लादेन ने अफगानिस्तान में बैठकर जिस तरह अमेरिअक के दो टावरों को ध्वस्त किया ; जिस तरह पाकिस्तानी नागरिकों ने भारत से बहार बैठकर मुंबई, संसद तथा कश्मीर पर आक्रमण किए, उससे उनके अंतरराष्ट्रीय संबंधों का प्रमाण मिल जाता है |

भारत में आतंकबाद – भारत में आतंकबाद का आरंभ स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के साथ-साथ हो गया था | कश्मीर के मुद्दे पर भारत-पाकिस्तान के बीच जो खींचतान हुई, वह धीरे-धीरे हिन्दू-मुसलमान संघर्ष का घिनौना रूप धारण करने लगी | नए-नए आतंकवादी संगठन कुकुरर्मुतों की तरह उग रहे हैं | नागालैंड, मिज़ोरम, सिक्किम, उतर-पूर्व, तमिलनाडु, असम और अब हैदराबाद – सबमें कोई-न-कोई आतंकबादी गतिविधि जारी है | कहीं नक्सली आतंकवादी गुट मुख्मंत्री चंद्रबाबु पर आक्रमण कर रहा है तो कहीं उल्फा या लिट्टे सिरजोर बने हुए हैं |

हानियाँ – आतंकवाद फैलने से चारों अशांति का साम्राज्य हो जाता है | लोग चूहों की भाँती साँस लेते है और मरने को तैयार रहते हैं | वहाँ किसी प्रकार की ख़ुशी और उन्नति पसर नहीं पाती | आतंकवादी का कोई दीन-धर्म नहीं होता | वह अपनों का खून बहाने से भी बाज नहीं आता |

उपाय – आतंकवाद का सफाया करने के लिए जी-जान लगाने की हिम्मत चाहिए | हिम्मत ही नहीं, उसे कुचलने के लिए पूरी सावधानी, कुशलता और तत्परता भी चाहिए | सौभाग्य से अमेरिका के नेतृत्व में ऐसी कुछ शुरुआत हुई है | अगर अन्य देश भी इसी प्रकार संकल्प करके आतंकवाद को जड़ से समाप्त करने के लिए कुछ ठोस उपाय कर सकें तो एक-न-एक दिन यह विश्व आतंकवाद सुशांत प्रदेश बन सकेगा |
