पराधीनता का आशय – पराधीनता का आशय है – दुसरे के अधीन | अधीनता बहुत बड़ा दुःख है | हर आदमी स्वतंत्र रहना चाहता है | यहाँ तक कि सोने के पिंजरे में बंद पक्षी भी राजमहल के सुखों और स्वादिष्ट भोगों को छोड़कर खुले आकाश में उड़ जाना चाहता है |

स्वतंत्रता : जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार – प्रत्येक बच्चा सवतंत्र पैदा होता है | किसी मनुष्य, देश, समाज या राष्ट्र को यह अधिकार नहीं है कि वह किसी व्यक्ति, देश समूह या राष्ट्र को बलपूर्वक अपने अधीन करे | आज विश्व के अधिकांश संविधान यह स्वीकार कर चिके हैं कि प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को स्वतंत्रता का अधिकार है |

मैथिलीशरण गुप्त ने कहा है –

अधिकार खोकर बैठ रहना, यह महा दुष्कर्म है |

न्यायार्थ अपने बंधू को भी दंड देना धर्म है |

पराधीनता की हानियाँ – पराधीन व्यक्ति जीवित होते हुए भी मृत के समान होता है | वह दासों के समान परायी और बसी ज़िंदगी जीता है | वह सदा अपने मालिक की और टुकर-टुकर निहारता है | हितोपदेश में कहा गया है – “जो प्रधीन्होने पर भी जीते हैं तो मरे हुए कौन हैं ?”

पराधीनता के प्रकार – पराधीन केवल बही नहीं होता, जिसके पैरों में बेड़ियाँ हों या चारों और दीवारों का घेरे हो | वह व्यक्ति भी पराधीन होता हिया जिसका मन गुलाम है | जैसे अंग्रेजों ने भारतियों को आज़ाद कर दिया, परंतु अनके भारतियों के मन अब भी अंग्रेजों के गुलाम हैं | जैसे अंग्रेजों ने भारतियों को आज़ाद कर दिया, परंतु अनके भारतियों के मन अब भी अंग्रेज़ों के गुलाम हैं | वे आज भी अंग्रेज़ीदां होने में गर्व अनुभव करते हैं | भला ‘निज संस्कुती’ से उखड़े हुए ऐसे लोगों को स्वाधीन या स्वतंत्र कैसे कहें ?

आर्थिक पराधीनता – पराधीनता का एक अन्य महत्वपूर्ण प्रकार है – अधिक पराधीनता | गरीब देशों को न चाहते हुए भी अपने ऋणदाता देशों की कुछ गलत बारें माननी पड़ती हैं | अतः यदि भारतवासियों को आज़ादी का सुख भोगना है तो उन्हें पराधीनता की हर बेड़ी को तोड़ना होगा |

जीवन की सरसता के लिए मित्र की आवश्यकता – ‘मित्रता’ का तात्पर्य है – किसी के दुःख-सुख का सच्चा साथी होना | सच्चे मित्रों में कोई दुराव-छिपाव नहीं होता | वे निश्छल भाव से अपना सुख-दुख दुसरे को कह सकते हैं | उनमें आपसी विश्वास होता है | विश्वास के कारण ही वे अपना ह्रदय दुसरे के सामने खोल पाते हैं |

मित्रता शक्तिवर्धक औषधि के समान है | मित्रता में नीरस से कम भी आसानी से हो जाते हैं | दो मित्र मिलकर दो से ग्यारह हो जाते है |

जीवन-संग्राम में मित्र महत्वपूर्ण – मनुष्य को अपनी ज़िंदगी के दुःख बाँटने के लिए कोई सहारा चाहिए | मित्रता ही ऐसा सहारा है | एडिसन महोदय लिखते हैं – ‘मित्रता ख़ुशी को दूना करके और दुःख को बाँटकर प्रसन्नता बढ़ाती है तथा मुसीबत कम करती है |’

सच्चे मित्र की परख और चुनाव – विद्वानों का कहना है कि अचानक बनी मित्रता से सोच-समझकर की गई मित्रता अधिक ठीक है | मित्र को पहचानने में जल्दी नहीं करनी चाहिए | यह काम धीरे-धीरे धर्यपूर्वक कारण चाहिए | सुकरात का बचन है- ‘ मित्रता करके में शीघ्रता मत करो, परंतु करो तो अंत तक निभाओ |’

मित्रता समान उम्र के, समान स्तर के, समान रूचि के लोगों में अधिक गहरी होती है | जहाँ स्तर में असमानता होगी, वहाँ छोटे-बड़े का भेद होना शुरू हो जाएगा |

सच्ची मित्र वाही है जो हमें कुमार्ग की और जाने से रोके तथा सन्मार्ग की प्रेरणा दे | सच्चा मित्र चापलूसी नहीं करता | मित्र के अवगुणों प्र पर्दा भी नहीं डालता | वह कुशलता-पूर्वक मित्र को उसके अवगुणों से सावधान करता है | उसे सन्मार्ग पर चलने में सहयोग देता है |

सच्चा मित्र मिलना सौभाग्य की बात – यह सत्य है कि सच्चा मित्र हर किसी को नहीं मिलता | विश्वासपात्र मित्र एक खजाना हैजो किसी-किसी को ही मिलता है | अधिकतर लोग तो परिचितों की भीड़ में अकेले रहते हैं | दख-सुख में उनका कोई साठी नहीं होता | जिस किसी को अपना एक सह्रदय मित्र मिल जाए, वह स्वयंक को सौभाग्यशाली समझे |

परोपकार

परोपकार का महत्व – परोपकार अर्थात् दूसरों के काम आना इस सृष्टि के लिए अनिवार्य है | वृक्ष अपने लिए नहीं, औरों के लियेफल धारण करते हैं | नदियाँ भी पाना जल स्वयं नहीं पीतीं | परोपकारी मनुष्य संपति का संचय भी औरों के कल्याण के लिए करते हैं | साडी प्रकुर्ती निस्वार्थ समपर्ण का संदेश देती है | सूरज आता है, रोशनी देकर चला जाता है | चंद्रमा भी हमसे कुछ नहीं लेता, केवल देता ही देता है | कविवर पंत के शब्दों में – 

हँसमुख प्रसून सिखलाते 
पलभर है, जो हँस पाओ |
अपने उर की सौरभ से 
जग का आँगन भर जाओ ||

परोपकार से प्राप्त आलौकिक सुख – परोपकार का सुख लौकिक नहीं, अलौकिक है | जब कोई व्यक्ति निस्वार्थ भाव से किसी छायल की सेवा करता है तो उस क्षण उसे पाने देवत्व के दर्शन होते हैं | वह मनुष्य नहीं, दीनदयालु के पद पर पहुँच जाता है | वह दिव्य सुख प्राप्त करता है | उस सुख की तुलना में धन-दौलत कुछ भी नहीं है | 

परोपकार के विविध उदाहरन – भारत में परोपकारी महापुरषों की कमी नहीं है | यहाँ दधीची जैसे ऋषि हुए जिन्होंने अपने जाति के लिए अपने शरीरी की हड्डियाँ दान में दे दीं | यहाँ सुभाष जैसे महँ नेता हुए जिन्होंने देश को स्वतंत्र कराने के लिए अपना तन-मन-धन और सरकारी नौकरी छोड़ दी | बुद्ध, महावीर, अशोक, गाँधी, अरविंद जैसे महापुरषों के जीवन परोपकार के कारण ही महान बन सके हैं |

परोपकार में ही जीवन की सार्थकता – परोपकार दिखने में घाटे का सौदा लगता है | परंतु वास्तव में हर तरह से लाभकारी है | महात्मा गाँधी को परोपकार करने से जो गौरव और समान मिला ; भगत सिंह को फाँसी पर चढ़ने से जो आदर मिला ; बुद्ध को राजपाट छोड़ने से जो ख्याति मिली, क्या वह एक भोगी राजा बन्ने से मिल सकती थी ? कदापि नहीं | परोपकारी व्यक्ति सदा प्रसन्न, निर्मल और हँसमुख रहता है | उसे पश्चाताप या तृष्णा की आग नहीं झुलसाती | परोपकारी व्यक्ति पूजा के योग्य हो जाता है | उसके जीवन की सुगंध सब और व्याप्त हो जाती है | अतः मनुष्य को चाहिए की वह परोपकार को जीवन में धारण करें | यही हमारा धर्म है |

No Pains, No Gains

This saying signifies that nothing great and noble can be achieved without a good deal of effort, struggle and sacrifice. As William Penn puts it, “no pain, no palm, no throes, no throne; no fall, no glory, no cross, no crown”. There are not short-cuts to success or golden rules to grow rich or to acquire scholarship in a few hours.

In the witty words of G.B. Shaw, the golden rule is that there is no golden rule. The path of hard and systematic and since rework leads one to the haven of success. It is a myth that often idles is happier than those who take pairs and apply then shoulders to the wheel. Another wrong notion among us is that without genius a student cannot become a first-rate scholar, howsoever painstaking he may be otherwise, as a matter of fact, genius as defined by Edison, is ‘one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration’. Another write Hopkins says: ‘Gift, like genius, I often think means only an infinite capacity of taking pains.” Rome was not built in a day.

Knowledge is Power

There is a difference between ‘strength’ and ‘power’ we say ‘the power of the press’ and not ‘the strength of the press’. A tiger has strength and this is only physical. Contrarily, a man with ideas or knowledge has power which for superior to and dominates mere physical force. It is rightly said ‘a pen is mightier than a sword.’ Today man with has gradually mounting knowledge and wisdom has been able through science, to unravel the mysteries of nature and harness then for his own benefits. Brain, not brawn (muscles) rules the world. Man with his superior intelligence is capable of domesticating the wildest and most fierce animal. He with his knowledge of science, can soar in the sky without wings, and reached the most distant place in few hours. The point is that power resides in ideas and not in muscles of the body. A competent doctor with one or just two injections can save life of the mightiest wrestler, because of his knowledge of medical science.

I am the Master of My Fate

Man is the maker of his destiny. He is his own star. His character and actions determine his future. Chance plays only an insignificant role in life. There is no effect without a cause, although sometimes the cause may be hidden from our view. Every failure of a particular person should be attributed to the limitations in his person and not to a call us God with arbitrary ways. ‘The fault, clear, Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underling.”

Man himself is responsible for his failures and successes. He is not the creature of unto wand circumstances, but creator of congenial circumstances in which he may thrive and rise from glory to glory. He will be what he wills himself to be. Only cowards are fatalists and live daily in regular fear of imaginary being like ghosts or phantoms. In Europe only a small number of men believe in fate. In the east the masses are ignorant and superstitions and believe that man is a slave of fate to the powers that be leaving alone the philosophical discussion about fate, it will always pay man to assume that he is the master of his fate.

We Live in Deeds, Not in Years

Keats passed away at the age of twenty-six. But what of trat! He is immortal as he has left behind imperishable footprints on the sand of time. The poets smear by Odes. His achievement compels wonder. In a period of four years, he wrote verse that so far is Un-excelled. As a matter of fact, one’s achievement counts more than one’s length of life. Surely, Keats lives in deeds, not in years. Truly has Ben Jonson saying:

“In small proportions we just beauties see;
and in short measures life may perfect be.”

One day of action, beauty and glory is better than a year so passivity, dullness and indolence. As Ben Johnson would tell us ‘a live of day’s is far better and blessed than ‘an oak, three hundred years’ because while the former is ‘the plant and flower of light,’ the better is destined ‘to fall a log at last, dry bald and sere’. The perfect life is the life of beauty, nobility and utility, howsoever short is be.

Sidaey Keyes dies prematurely at the age of twenty-one. Still he carved out a niche for himself in field of modern poetry and his ‘Prospero’ is a gem of a poem. The instance of Mrs. Toru Dutt is illuminating and revealing. She died before she was twenty-two and like Keats she is also the inheritor of unfulfilled renown. Her poem, like ‘The three of life’ and ‘Our aserarina tree’ and immortal. She lived in deeds and not in years.

So Sheridan rightly remarked ‘A life worthy should be measured by deeds not years’. A single movement of achievement is thousand times better than thousand flat and tame moments.

Tagore is revered for ‘Gitanjali’ and not the many years be lived. Mere breathing or causing won’t do. One should live virtually and vigorously. One should do something worthy of note and recognition.
