A Rainy Day

India is a land of varying seasons. Summer, winter, spring and autumn, all fill the circle of the weather in India. Summer is extremely hot in this tropical country. Rains, however, bring the much desired relief. A rainy day in summer is really sought after by one and all. The sun shines too bright in the month of June. Hot winds keep blowing throughout the day. Thick layers of dust remain suspended in the sky for days. Men, animals and birds look towards the sky for days together. The 21st of June last was perhaps the hottest day of the season. It was very hot in the afternoon. The sky above burnt like silver. All of sudden, the clouds gathered in the sky. A cool wind began to blow. At first, it started drizzling. It was followed by a heavy downpour. The thirsty earth began to absorb rain water. Children came out of their houses and they exposed their sun-baked bodies to welcome shower. Soon, it began raining in torrents. All the streets, lanes and by-lanes were flooded with water. People could be seen wading through knee-deep water. Rickshaw pullers made money even for a short ride. It rained for full one hour. At last, it stopped raining. The water started receding. The weather became cool and pleasant. Plants and trees wore a new look. The sky resounded with the chorus of warbling birds. A rainbow in the sky added extra charm to the pleasant weather. People went out to enjoy the fine weather. It was thus a good riddance from the scorching heat of the sun. a rainy day in summer is blessing.

The Saddest Day Of My Life

Life is strange mixture of joys and sorrows. Some days are so sad that they take away all joy and peace from the life of man. I cannot forget the day that was the saddest day in my life. It was the 25th of June in the year 2002. The night had been sleepless because of scorching heat, attack of mosquitoes and frequent failure of electricity. Early in the morning as I was dozing off to sleep, a postman woke me up. It was a sad news. My elder brother who had gone to Pune to attend a seminar on education died there in a road accident. Hardly had my parents left for Pune by car when a police party reached out place. I lost ground under my feet. They had warrant for my arrest in connection with a student agitation in our college. They did not listen to my entreaties and took me to the police station. I rang up my lawyer friend but he was out of station. It was only in the evening that I was bailed out. As I reached home, I found my younger sister crying bitterly. She told me that my nephew had been admitted to the hospital because of severe pain the stomach.  I rushed to the hospital in a rickshaw. On the way I broke my leg and had to keep my leg in plaster for over three weeks. It is rightly said that misfortunes do not come alone. Even today when I remember that day of untold miseries, my heart comes into my mouth. It was really the saddest day of my life.

An Extremely Cold Day In Winter

India is a land of extreme climates. In summer, It is very hot. In winter, it is biting cold. It was a bitterly cold day. The morning was icy cold and the sun was simply peeping out. It appeared that the warm rays of the sun would soon spread from everywhere to everywhere. But a saying goes that morning shows the day. The icy wind was getting every minute the better of the warmth of the sun. it cut one deep into the very marrow. Outside, the low sky began to drizzle. People were hurrying about with cheeks red, hands almost frozen. A few fortunate rich sitting at home drew closer to the room heater. Those out of doors cursed the weather. All of a sudden, there was hailstorm. It made things worse. The sun peeped out but was soon covered with mist and fog. Everybody longed for a sunny day. People tried to keep within doors. A poor homeless beggar looked almost frozen in the cold weather outside. An old man in the locality was reported dead. Afternoon came with all the more intensity of cold. The fury of the cold evening was unabated. There was no relief from the stinging wind that passed by. At night, people tried to feel the cosiness of the quilt. It was an extremely cold day in winter for years to come.

A Hot Day In Summer

India is a land of extreme climates. In summer, it is extremely hot in the plains. I remember one summer day that was really very hot. It was a sultry day in summer. It was very close and stuffy in the morning. Not a leaf stirred anywhere. It seemed as if the wind had conspired not to blow. Thick layers of dust were suspended in space. At noon, the sun peeped through the yellow layers of dust. There was no relief. The electric fans gave no air though they seemed to be moving. Birds flew for shelter and looked for water. The tap water was boiling. The tarcoal spread on the road melted at places. The ball of fire seemed to be hung in the sky. Sleep was out of question in such an intense hot weather. Everybody complained of the scorching heat. Ice was in great demand. Time hung heavy on all. What a terrible time it was ! I can never forget that day. It was late in the afternoon that there appeared a small patch of clouds in the sky. Soon, the clouds gathered in the sky. One could hear a strong wind whistling. A thunder storm was approaching. People came out of their houses and looked towards the sky. Birds could be seen flying about. Suddenly, it became dark. Nothing could be seen or heard. The black rain began to spatter down. It was a heavy downpour. The thirsty earth seemed to absorb rain water. It became cool and pleasant. It rained for full two hours. Everybody heaved a sigh of relief. Children came out and began enjoying the rain. In this way, the hot afternoon soon changed into a cool and refreshing evening.

The Independence Day

Independence is hundred times better than slavery. India won freedom on 15th August, 1947. It is a red letter day in our history.  The Independence Day is celebrated every year throughout India. This year, we celebrated this day with great pomp and show. Great preparations were made a day before the function. The program was chalked out in advance. Portraits of our great leaders were hung on the walls of the hall. Their famous sayings were displayed in the college library. We went to college at 7 a.m. on the Independence Day. We stood in circular rows in the playground. Our Principle unfurled the flag.  He made a speech. In his speech he told us about the importance of the Independence Day. He reminded us of our duties and rights. He also told us that a great number of people had laid down their lives for the sake of freedom. The students sang patriotic songs.  A one –act play was also staged. It was a patriotic play. Then a volleyball match was played between the staff and the students. The students won the match. In the end, prizes were given away to the winners. We were full of high hopes. We vowed to lead our country on to the path of progress. True independence means service of the country. The need of the hour is to preserve this hard-won freedom.

Your College Sports Day

Games and sports are as essential as studies. They provide the much desired change in the dull academic life of the college. In fact, the college sports day is an eagerly awaited day. This year, the college sports meet was held on the 15th of February last. It was celebrated with great pomp and show. The students started gathering in the grounds early in the morning. The college grounds were well marked with lime and small flags. A beautiful shamiana was put up in one corner of the ground. The sports meet was presided over by veteran sportswoman P.T. Usha.  She was received at the welcome gate by the Principle, members of the staff and some senior most athletes. She unfurled the college flag and declared the meet open. The prayers marched past her and saluted her. The senior athletes, on behalf of the participants, took an oath that the players would participate in games in the true spirit of sportsmanship. After this, the sports started. First, we saw items like high jump, long jump, discus throw, hammer throw, shot put, etc. For the girls there were items like chati race, potato race, musical chair race and sack race. It was spectacular show. Then, we had other races. It was great fun to see all these. The whole day passed in merry-making. At last, the staff race was held. In the evening, the chief guest gave away  prizes to the winners. The chief guest, in her short speech, inspired students to make a larger participation in games and sports. This brought the sports day to a close. The next day was declared a holiday.

To
The Manager,
Life Insurance Corporation of India.
Ropar.

 Dear Sir,

I would like to have a life insurance policy for myself. I want to know the different kinds of policies which are offered by the LIC. I learn from the various advertisements put up by LIC that a very large number of LIC schemes are now available for prospective buyer. Some of these schemes are meant for children only. I would like to know all the pros and cons of these schemes. I would also like to know about the schemes related to the mutual funds (e.g. the Future Plus Scheme of LIC) where one can have quick returns. Please send me the necessary literature or depute your agent who can discuss the matter with me. I also want to know as to which policy will be suitable for me. I am a salaried man and a central government employee.

I shall feel grateful if your agent contacts me on any Sunday before lunch hours. He can give me a ring at 2264756 before coming.

Thanking you,
Yours faithfully,
S.I. Mehra.
